The addition of a conservatory is a great way to provide extra space and light, whilst enhancing your property and adding value to your home.

The history of the conservatory / garden room was the love of plants and the fact that they bought the garden into homes. Although a great deal of greenery is used to furnish conservatories in our modern day living, this extra space is used more as a relaxing environment and offers a comfortable all year round living space.

Orangeries first became popular in the 1700s when citrus plants were introduced and the climate these plants need to flourish needed to be addressed. At first buildings of this nature were expensive to construct, and required a large open space, therefore orangeries were available only to the wealthy.

These buildings often featured large columns made from stone, and a solid back wall. The front and sides had a huge glass double door more often than not with a semi circular window above. The rest would have been made up of floor to ceiling windows, in keeping with the original architecture. Internally there were plastered walls, cornices and pilasters. During the summer months whilst the plants were enjoying the warmer weather the orangery would be used for entertaining and summer balls.

The popularity of conservatories was extensive during Victorian times; this was due to the advance in heating techniques the developments in the cast iron industry and the availability of cheaper glass due to the abolition of window tax.

The furnishings inside would consist of a cast iron table and chairs, a tiled floor with rugs all easily removed for maintenance purposes.

The Edwardians chose to have a simpler design with wicker furniture and benches much the same as we have today.

Their simplistic designs and desire for lightness was matched by their passion for outdoor living. They considered gardens to be an extension of their home and conservatories were the point where their homes and gardens merged.

To maintain the harmony of home and garden the windows were purposely made extremely wide so as to give maximum light and not obstruct the view to the garden. Today’s orangeries and conservatories are built with the same ideas in mind.
